How to Fix a Broken Heat Pump

While heat pumps are a newer development in central heating technology, they can still experience problems like any other machine. Heat pumps in the Kenosha and Racine area are forced to work their absolute hardest to combat Wisconsin’s harsh winters. You can expect a heat pump in Wisconsin to degrade faster than other climate zones. Whether you need a troubleshooting guide or emergency heat pump repair in Racine, Southport Home Services is here to help.

4 Steps for Troubleshooting a Broken Heat Pump

  • Check the Thermostat: Raise the temperature ten degrees and wait a few minutes. If you don’t notice a change there is a problem with your thermostat. Southport Home Services can usually repair or replace a thermostat in one day.

  • Check the Air Filter: Your central air system uses a filter to clean the air before it enters your home. These filters should be changed at least twice a year.

  • Check the Breakers: The breaker that supplies power to your heat pump might have been tripped. Reset it to ensure your unit has power.

  • Clean the Coils: Your AC unit uses condenser coils to transfer heat. The coils can become clogged with dirt and debris over time and stifle your unit’s performance. You can buy foaming coil cleaner at most hardware stores.

Fix a Frozen Heat Pump

Sometimes ice can form on your heat pump’s condenser unit. Under normal conditions, a heat pump enters a defrost cycle to melt the ice. Southeast Wisconsin’s heavy snowfall can cause condenser units to become so caked with snow and ice they can’t enter the defrost cycle. Turn off the unit and ensure the filter isn’t clogged with ice. Try melting the ice with warm (not boiling) water. If this doesn’t solve the issue contact a service technician to further address the problem.
