13 Low-Cost Ways to Make Your Heating Energy-Efficient

Safe and Comfortable During the Winter Months:

  • Shutting down your air conditioning – You really don’t have to do anything to shut down your air conditioner for the winter season. Although, covers are available they are typically not needed.
  • Humidifier – Change the damper setting on your humidifier to winter setting.
  • Before using your fireplace, having your fireplace cleaned and inspected annually by a certified company.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector – every year there are hundreds of incidences where families fall victim to carbon monoxide poisoning. Choose a detector that incorporates an audible alarm to signal if CO levels reach unsafe levels, and test them every 6 months.
  • Check Air Filters – Dirty air filters are the most common problem we encounter when called for furnace problems. We recommend that air filters be checked every 30 days. Clean or replace as needed.
  • Use a Programmable Thermostat – You can save as much as 10% a year on utility bills by turning your thermostat back at least 10-15 degrees for eight or more hours a day.
  • Check and Adjust Registers – Adjust registers to allow your furnace to work more efficiently. Close partially in rooms that are too warm.
  • Check area around your furnace to make sure all items are stored at least six inches away from equipment.
  • Check cold air returns – make sure your cold air returns have at least six inches of space between them and any furniture or personal items. Blocked cold air returns will decrease the efficiency of your system.
  • Check windows, doors, electric outlets, light fixtures, and locations where pipes enter your home for air leaks – caulk, install, or replace weather stripping, or insulate at needed.
  • Add insulation to your attic if there is less than five inches.
  • Insulate and seal ducts especially ductwork that is in areas like attics, crawl spaces, and garages.
  • Let the sunshine in – during the winter months the sun angles lower, generating a higher level of solar heat. Open window coverings on the south side of your home during the day and close them at night.
